The Energy Source With the Highest Consequence When It Goes Wrong
Natural gas and propane are clean, efficient, and widely used residential energy sources that serve millions of homes without incident for decades. The incidents that do occur — gas leaks, explosions, carbon monoxide poisoning — are catastrophic in a way that other home system failures aren’t. Understanding the safety basics of residential gas systems, the warning signs that indicate problems, and the appropriate responses to concerns is home safety knowledge that every gas-appliance household should have.
Most of this knowledge is simple and practical. Gas system safety doesn’t require technical expertise — it requires knowing what the warning signs are, where the shutoff is, and when to call rather than investigate.
Know Your Shutoffs
The individual appliance shutoffs (the valve on the gas supply line within a few feet of each gas appliance) and the main gas shutoff (at the meter, where the gas service enters the building) are the emergency controls that stop gas flow when a problem occurs. Every adult in the household should know where both types are and how to operate them.
Individual appliance shutoffs are typically ball valves with a lever handle — turn the handle perpendicular to the pipe to close. The main shutoff at the meter typically requires a wrench (a dedicated wrench kept near the meter). After shutting off gas service at the meter for any reason, a licensed plumber or gas technician must inspect the system and relight all pilot lights before restoring service — don’t restore service yourself after a meter shutoff for anything beyond a planned maintenance event.
Recognizing a Gas Leak
Natural gas has an added odorant (mercaptan) that gives it the distinctive rotten-egg or sulfur smell that most people recognize as ‘gas smell.’ This odorant is specifically added because natural gas itself is odorless. If you smell this odor indoors: don’t operate any electrical switches (sparks from switches can ignite gas), don’t use open flame, don’t use your phone inside the structure — exit the building immediately, leaving the door open behind you, and call your gas company’s emergency line from outside.
A gas smell that’s faint and comes and goes may indicate a minor connection issue or a pilot that’s gone out — but the correct response is the same: exit and call before investigating. A gas smell that’s strong or persistent is an emergency requiring immediate evacuation and the gas company’s emergency line, not investigation.
Carbon Monoxide: The Gas-Appliance Byproduct
Gas appliances — furnaces, boilers, water heaters, ranges, dryers, and fireplaces — produce carbon monoxide as a combustion byproduct. When combustion is complete and the appliance is venting correctly, CO is exhausted outside the building before concentrations reach dangerous levels. When combustion is incomplete (a burner problem) or the venting system fails (a cracked heat exchanger, a blocked flue, a disconnected vent pipe), CO enters the living space.
CO detectors are required by code in most jurisdictions and should be installed on every level of the home, within 10–15 feet of sleeping areas. CO alarms that sound require immediate evacuation and a call to the gas company — CO at alarm-triggering concentrations is immediately life-threatening. Symptoms of CO poisoning (headache, dizziness, nausea that improve when leaving the building) warrant evacuation and emergency services even without an alarm.
Annual Gas Appliance Inspection
Every gas appliance in the home benefits from annual inspection by a licensed gas technician: the furnace or boiler (burner condition, heat exchanger integrity, venting system), the water heater (burner condition, anode rod if it’s a storage tank, venting), and a gas range (burner condition, connections, oven ignition). Many gas companies offer appliance safety inspections at low or no cost as part of their customer safety programs.
The specific inspection item with the most safety consequence is the furnace heat exchanger — a cracked heat exchanger allows CO from combustion to mix with circulated air and enter the living space. This failure develops invisibly and can’t be detected without inspection. A furnace that’s 15+ years old, or one where CO detector readings are elevated during furnace operation, should be specifically evaluated for heat exchanger integrity.
