The Repair That Pays for Itself in the First Month
A toilet that runs continuously — the sound of water flowing into the tank that never stops — is wasting water at a rate of 20–200 gallons per day depending on the severity. At average residential water rates, a moderately running toilet costs $30–$200 per month in wasted water. The repair in most cases costs $10–$50 in parts and 30–60 minutes of time, with no specialized plumbing knowledge required.
Running toilets are among the most cost-effective DIY plumbing repairs available because the parts are inexpensive, the diagnosis is straightforward, and the repair requires no tools beyond basic hand tools. The most common mistake is deferring the repair because ‘it’s just a small thing’ — at $50–$100 per month in water cost, it’s a recurring expense that accumulates quickly.
Diagnosing the Cause: Two Primary Possibilities
Remove the toilet tank lid and observe the internal components while the toilet is running. The two primary causes of a running toilet are immediately observable: the flapper (the rubber seal at the tank bottom that covers the flush valve opening) is failing to seat correctly and allowing water to leak into the bowl, or the fill valve is stuck open or improperly adjusted and water is running into the overflow tube.
The paper dye test distinguishes these: add a few drops of food coloring to the tank water. Wait 15 minutes without flushing. If colored water appears in the bowl, the flapper is leaking. If the water in the tank stays colored and you can hear or see water flowing into the overflow tube (the tall tube in the center of the tank), the fill valve or its adjustment is the problem.
Flapper Replacement: The Most Common Fix
A failing flapper — rubber that has degraded, warped, or accumulated mineral deposits that prevent a proper seal — is the cause of the majority of running toilets. Flappers are inexpensive ($5–$15) and replace in minutes without turning off the water supply.
Replacement process: identify the flapper model (take the old one to the hardware store, or note the toilet brand and model number and search the manufacturer’s replacement recommendation). Unhook the chain from the flush handle arm, unhook the flapper ears from the overflow tube pegs, remove the old flapper. Install the new flapper by reversing this process. Adjust the chain length so there’s slight slack when the flapper is seated — too little slack lifts the flapper and causes a constant leak; too much slack causes incomplete flushing.
Fill Valve Adjustment and Replacement
If the dye test shows water flowing into the overflow tube rather than the bowl, the fill valve is the problem — either the water level adjustment is set too high, or the fill valve itself is failing to shut off when the tank is full.
Water level adjustment: the correct water level is approximately 1 inch below the top of the overflow tube. Most fill valves have an adjustment screw or a float adjustment (either turn an adjustment screw on the valve body, or pinch a clip on the float arm to raise or lower the float). Adjust to lower the water level below the overflow tube opening and listen for the toilet to stop running.
If adjustment doesn’t resolve the running, the fill valve itself needs replacement. Universal fill valves (Fluidmaster 400A is the most common) replace any standard fill valve, cost $10–$15, and install in about 20 minutes with the water supply turned off.
The Flush Handle and Chain: The Simple Fixes That Get Missed
Before replacing any internal components, check the simplest possible causes. A toilet that runs and then stops when you jiggle the handle has a chain that’s too short (preventing the flapper from seating fully) or a flapper that’s partially open due to the chain being caught under the flapper edge. Adjust the chain length or reposition it.
A flush handle that’s loose, sticking, or not returning fully to its resting position can keep the flapper partially lifted — the handle should return promptly to horizontal after flushing. A handle with a loose nut (accessed from inside the tank — the nut is reverse-threaded and tightens clockwise when viewed from outside) or a bent handle arm can cause this behavior and is a no-cost fix.
